About the Exhibition

Mandela: The Official Exhibition is a major global exhibition that explores the life of the world’s most famous freedom fighter and political leader. His epic story is told across four experiential galleries at the African American Museum Dallas — from his rural childhood home through years of turbulent struggle against the apartheid regime, to his eventual vindication and final years as South Africa’s first democratically elected president.

Through the voices of Madiba himself, his family, and those who knew him best, visitors see Nelson Mandela in a new and profoundly human light. This is more than history — it is a story that challenges each of us to reflect on who we are and what we stand for.

More than a century on from his birth, the exhibition asks: what does ‘Nelson Mandela’ mean today, in a world where inequality and injustice still persist? His values and his commitment to making the world a better place is just as vital now as they were during his lifetime.

"...a life well lived, a struggle well fought and a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to make a difference in the world."

— Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela MP
Grandson of Nelson Mandela

How the Exhibition Was Created

Developed with the Mandela Family

Mandela: The Official Exhibition was created in partnership with Round Room Live and the Royal House of Mandela, led by Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela — Nelson Mandela’s grandson and chief of the Mvezo Traditional Council. Objects and stories were gathered in collaboration with the Mandela family, Robben Island Museum, and close friends and colleagues including Zelda la Grange, who served as President Mandela’s personal assistant for 19 years. Many artifacts on display have never previously been shown outside South Africa.
